Advanced sailors know how important safety is when leading their ship. They pick the best route and are aware of the weather and waves.
It’s good to learn sailing basics. Once you become an expert, sailing can take you anywhere.
Here are three places that are at the top of my list.
Northern Exumas
Exumas is magical spot. To get there, leave from from Miami or Ft. Lauderdale in Southern Florida and head out. It is about 40 miles from Nassau to the north.It is across open water you so it may be choppy depending on the season. Prepare for a bit of bumpiness! The northern Exumas has plenty of anchorages to moor in. Best of all, this is a great opportunity to hang out with the swimming pigs of Staniel Cay. They have become a bit like friendly neighborhood (water) dogs. They love table scraps!
Annapolis, MD
One of the first things you should do once you make it to D.C. is go sailing in Annapolis. Home of the U.S. Navy, spending a day on the water here is an incredible opportunity. You get to catch some breathtaking views of the capital as you sail into the sunset. Plus, if you’re looking to improve your sailing skills, the Annapolis Sailing School offers classes.
Thailand
If you really serious travel experience, Thailand is a life-changing sailing destination. Islands of karst limestone are scattered between the 120 miles between the Malaysian border and Phuket. Whether you’re looking for a place to party, or a place to seek spiritual rejuvanation, you’ll find everything on these mysterious islands. Many have “hongs” (rooms): alcoves and even small beaches inside the islands. Find revelers at the larger Ko Phi Phi in Phuket. Lose yourself in the serenity of Phang Nga Bay. There are thousands of options when it comes to finding a sailing destination. Many of these spots offer fully-serviced charter operations; but if you have sailing experience, you will be better prepared than the average tourist.
